Why manhole covers are round

There's a version of this question you've probably heard, usually delivered by someone who just finished a Silicon Valley interview and wants you to know about it. Why are manhole covers round. The interviewer isn't testing your knowledge of civil engineering. They're testing whether you'll freeze, and whether you can reason out loud without pretending you already knew the answer.

The answer they're fishing for is elegant. A circle is the only shape that can't fall through a hole of its own size, no matter how it's tilted. A square cover, rotated to line up with its diagonal, slips straight through and drops onto whoever's underneath. Same problem with a rectangle, an oval, anything with a "long way across." A circle has the same width in every direction, so there's no orientation that lets it through.

This is true. It's also not really why manhole covers are round.

Ask the people who actually make and install them and you get duller, more practical reasons that never make it into a coding interview. Round covers don't need to be aligned. Drop one over the opening and it fits, regardless of rotation. A square one has to be lined up with the frame, which sounds trivial until you're a utility worker manhandling a hundred-plus pounds of cast iron in the rain.

They're also easier to move. You don't carry a manhole cover. You roll it, on its edge, like a coin. Try that with a square one.

There's a structural argument too, and it's the one engineers tend to reach for first. A circular cover distributes the load of everything rolling over it, cars, trucks, the odd bin lorry, evenly around its edge. Corners concentrate stress. Remove the corners and you remove the weak points, which means less material is needed to handle the same load. Cheaper to cast, less likely to crack.

So you end up with three separate, independently sufficient reasons for the same design choice: geometry prevents accidental drops, circles are easier to handle, and circles are structurally efficient. None of them needed the others to be true. They just all happened to point the same way, which is presumably why nobody seriously experimented with triangular manhole covers.

The interview question survives because the "can't fall through" answer is the most satisfying one to arrive at on the spot, sitting in a chair, under mild social pressure. It has the shape of an insight. The real answer is closer to how most engineering actually happens: several boring, uncoordinated reasons stacking up until the outcome looks inevitable in hindsight.

Which is also, probably, why nobody ever asks why manhole covers are round in the room where they're actually cast.
